So! Looks like Cory is having a bit of a reaction to his big brother getting shot in the chest. Is Diego really dead? What is Flyboy going to do next? What is Kanya going to do next? And who’s going to pay for cleaning up all that flying debris?

Yes, there is that tiny hope, but *I* hope Mitch won’t say it just to snap Cory out of it. It’s emotionally mean if it clearly can’t be true.

I’m thinking more that Mitch would be using one of his enhanced senses to see that Diego’s still breathing slightly or something, not that he’d lie or bluff about it to Cory.

I know, since he should be able to hear it, unless Cory’s voice makes him unable to focus on it.
Some times you just see that people (in their attempt to ‘help’ a grieing person) tries to install a ray of hope where there really isn’t one.
People are trying to help, but I think it just gives an unnecessary emotional reaction; When they might lose that last hope all over again.

With that yell, everybody might just be dead.

Tis a little scary. Actually reminds me a little of Spooky’s outburst in his bonus comic.

Look at those metal doors crumpling – this is very much Not Good.

Ironically though the vault door still looks pretty unaffected – at least in this panel.

And all that glass flying about.

Not to mention the forklift.

I hope they don’t have heavy stuff inside, but they probably do.

counterfeit money isn’t heavy except in large amounts.

I’m more worries about the glass and bricks. If those bricks and glass shards get shredded into shrapnel, they could be just as deadly as any cluster bomb.

The glass already looks like it’s very dangerous at this point. And even if the bricks don’t break up, they’re still a big problem if you get hit by them. Furthermore, there’s still one or two forklifts, which would definitely be bad to get hit with.

Forklift to the Face is NOT how I want to go.

Then you should obey the clearly posted, highly visible signs about compulsory Personal Protective Equipment, exactly like everyone else in this interlude hasn’t.

As overheard among coworkers the other day:

Why have boxes so large if they do not hold a large amount?

I never thought about it. Does counterfeit money way more or less than regular currency? How odd?

well I’d say it does… because seriously, if it had the same weight it must be the same metal or alloy of real money or else the desity should be different which results in a different weight. but think about it: if you would call it counterfeit money then you’d expect a very nice coinage to even pass…. now if the coinage AND the material were the same as with real money… how would it be different from realy money? ISure it’s produced illegally but noone could tell…

That is to say, I… err… I would not know whether counterfeit money is heavier or lighter than legitimate money.

May I ask what sort of Good Deed you were doing?

Delivering someone’s incorrectly delivered mail. It was an airmail package with ink or something spilled over the address, so the postie did the best they could to interpret it but was off by about 300 houses.

So rather than write “not at this address” on it and have it lost in the system forever, I looked up the guy’s name in the white pages and walked up today to give it to him.

That’s so nice of you!!

Minimal effort required, and it was faster and more effective than letting it go to Unclaimed Goods or Dead Letters. It was sent all the way from singapore, and looked from the labelling like some small but significant engine part, so I was pretty sure the guy would be waiting for it. Might even have a project stalled awaiting this part.

shock waves would only go outward, but it was demonstrated that Cory is able to “pull” things as well, like the door to the warehouse.

Looks to me like they’re going to circle around him and Diego in a shrapnel hurricane or something like that.

No, I think your take was right. Look at how the metal doors are being pulled inwards, and the parts of the floor that are coming up are all pointing in Cory’s direction. Plus if the glass and bricks were being blown outward, the pieces would all be on the outside, not coming into the warehouse like they are.

Maybe his powers are magnetic in nature.

Magnetic wouldn’t affect the glass shards and only Ferrous metals

It’s a minor Pet Peeve I’ve always had with the way Magneto is depicted, lol. Magnetism CAN do a lot really awesome things, and even things not directly related to metal manipulation, such as his gravity manipulation, are legit, but when he’s shown able to just manipulated any ‘ole object around because “magnets” I just get eye twitchy.

But so much in this world has metal in it. But I get it, it’s your flying snowman.

Plus, they DO show several times how Magneto’s powers are countered by the army/police etc. wising up and making their guns, uniforms, prisons etc. from glass and plastic.

It’s not like they show Maggie manipulating things that are blatantly non-magnetic or that clearly do not contain magnetic materials.

That’s the movies. He’s pulled some real BS in the comics over the years. They’ve gotten a lot better though. For Example, Adamantium is expressly stated to be non ferrous at several points earlier in Wolverines comics life, yet Magneto can still toss him around like for poops and giggles. The addressed this eventually by retconning adamantium to be an alloy which DOES in fact contain iron. Like I said, it has gotten a LOT better over the years.

Magnetism does not affect only ferrous metals. Just as an example, I have a die made from pure tungsten. You can lift it with an ordinary fridge magnet, even though tungsten is extremely heavy.

Really? My science may be a bit out of date, I do know that magnets and magnetic affects don’t interact with nickel or tin.

According to Wikipedia, nickel is ferromagnetic. Tin comes in two crystal forms, white tin, which is paramagnetic, and grey tin, which is diamagnetic. That is, nickel is attracted to magnets, and will be magnetized itself, the tin you usually see is attracted to magnets, but can not be magnetized, and the grey fluff tin turns into when it is too cold, is repelled by magnets.

I like that! LoL. Of course I could continue to argue the semantics of why *MY* take is not quite a Flying Snowman, but then, that’s rather the point of the Flying Snowman 😉 lol

Oh there are a lot of flying snowmen within the whole of the Marvel movies. Oh and here be spoilers if anyone hasn’t seen any of the Marvel movies.

1) Unscheduled arms and munitions delivery to the heloocarrier when it’s carrying Loki. I don’t care about the virus arrow. I could actually believe that. I can actually believe he could make the shot. I can’t believe that they would ever accept an unscheduled arms and munitions delivery while they are on high alert carrying a such a high profile captive.

2) Then we have Hawkeye open the hatch before they land and shoot an exploding arrow. And yet, they have escorts flying about to, I assume, watch for any enemy approaches. And yet they don’t see him open the hatch and shoot an exploding arrow? That doesn’t look suspicious?

3) And how did the dude in the warehouse know that the big green and buck ass nude guy was going to shrink down?

4) How did Tony not suspect that Loki would go after his arc reactor?

5) And then there is Captain America; Winter Soldier. Cap can bench press 2000lbs. You see him in the first movie lifting a motorcycle with dancing girls on it over his head. And yet he can’t knock out the Algerian pirate?? Really? Really?? But then later in the movie he fights off a half dozen guys in a freaking elevator and they have taser sticks and high powered magnetic wrist cuffs they’re using on him. NO! Just no! Especially considering that in the first Thor, Thor beat up a whole unit of highly trained soldiers without his powers.Don’t dumb down Cap’s abilities and then boost them back up for the rule of cool.

6) And honestly, how does the Iron suit protect Tony from dying when he keeps crashing hardcore? Or when he was testing the suit. The whole testing of the flying boots and his smacks into a wall? Dude should be in a hospital if not dead. Or is Tony a cyborg?

Deep breath. I better start. As it is, Mr. Dangerfield is going to make fun of me for not letting this go. 😛

You mean you didn’t bat an eye when Loki’s staff couldn’t make a mind slave out of Tony because “Metal parts”? 😛

Or that Nick Fury was able to just *get* the cell phone number of the russian guy Black Widow was “interrogating” to call her to let her know she was being reassigned, yet couldn’t manage to just simply bug the phone and collect the information without endangering anyone?

Well, that scene is awesome because of Coulson sitting on the other end of the line while Natasha does her thing. Plus, maybe the old guy did everything off line and old school, so send in the old school spy, yeah? So, no, I don’t suppose that part ever bothered me. But I will yell about the helocarrier and about the rising and dumbing down of Cap’s abilities for effect. 😀

Nope. I mean, that’s magic meeting technology, plus whatever element that was coursing through the magnet of power.

Flying forklift trucks and other debris, so not good. Cory is like a living emotional tornado. Mitch need to find a way to him and hug him!

I really hope Kany isn’t about to do anything stupid. Not sure if Cory or she is the most unpredictable right now. She could choose more than one direction to take this. Heck, since either the shots or/and the building imploding should get someone to call the cops, she could even come in handy in weird ways… depending on what she’ll do next.

That’s true, this page is extraordinary in the way it portray’s Cory’s grief. Not only in the masterful close-up facial expressions, but in the action, the way the dialogue is penned, the sheer emotional intensity of the layout and position/movement of the factory debris, how small Cory seems in the middle of it all, and even the panel layout how the bottom panel seems to break through the expected panel borders and just flood into the entire bottom half of the page.

Really brilliant work, Alex, Adam, and Vero! Each of you continue to set new standards for webcomics quality, and this page is a testament to your skills.

I could be projecting, but I think her expression in that shot is not one of a person about to engage in Random Acts of Stupidity. I really think that for all of her Hard-Ass strut before, she wanted to establish a position of strength and then settle things quietly and without collateral. I’m just thinking that in this case the Mobs bosses would have been more on her side than walrus ‘stache in deciding how to handle things.

Yeah -__- I hope she’s not, and she’s just all ‘Shit, I got to get away’, but she could try to finish what the mobster guy started.

On closer examination, she has movement lines in that second panel. She’s either considering tackling Mitch to get her gun back, or she’s resisting the urge to rush to Corey’s side, Her facial expression still looks (to me) like the second option. I just feel like she genuinely looks concerned.

The water works were just about to begin…and then that last panel happened….
the situation just went from really bad to…well, I think Mitch Defined it pretty well.

Down below I wondered if maybe Cory’s powers are magnetic in nature. Which could explain the pulling of things towards him.

I’m almost envisioning this mirroring his emotional reaction. Right now he’s collapsing in on himself, and everything appears to be getting drawn in. What happens in about 3 seconds when that reaction reverses and we get the emotional outburst, the transition from denial to rage.

Good theory. Could very well be 🙂

So maybe some kinda black hole type scenario?

I still think just straight up telekinesis. Just right now he’s not in control and his powers are reacting to his emotions. Pulling everything in right now while his reaction is focused inward, then when he snaps into the angry outburst, it’s all gonna reverse directions and be blown AWAY.

Oh my gosh. How could have completely forgotten to camp tonight.

I did an AWESOME ‘How could I forget’ yesterday (friday) morning xD

Woke up, really tired, almost at the point of oversleeping for the bus to work. I scramble around to get ready to leave, and notice I only packed up fruit in my lunch box. Oh noes, didn’t prepare my break snack + lunch the evening before, even more busy now. Makes lunch box, packs it and grab the 27 DKr (Danish kroners) on my table for the cantine lady and hurries off.
Still, it wasn’t until I actually sat at work, talking about my breakfast having to be a banana (because I only had bread enough for the lunch box) that it struck me WHY I hadn’t packed more than fruit: Because I had ordered lunch from the cantina + every friday morning we get free breakfast at work.
Carrying the 27DKr in my pocket all the way, not having made lunch, and seeing the cantina lady.. and it still took me an embarrasing few more minutes to sink in LOL Talk about being morning tired.

And in completely non-related news. My aquarium snail seems to have found itself a new game. It’s been chilling out next to the bubble wall for a couple hours, then suddenly, just now, over the top of my laptop screen I seen something moving. I glance up. The snail is catching air bubbles and pulling them inside it’s shell till it get buoyant enough to float up tot he top of the water, then it’s ejecting the excess air to drop back down, crawling back over to the bubble wall, rinse, repeat. LoL.

That’s so cool!

I want to play that game! I’d have to acquire a shell first though.

I’d probably need a bigger aquarium too

I was just scrolling down this page, minding my own business, and then I saw “Snail parkour!” and snorted so loud I scared the cat. The cat is a bit excitable, so she flipped her shit and had a brief but noisy altercation with my parents’ door before dashing off down the stairs. 15 seconds later, my dad came out and grumped down the stairs, then stepped on the other cat.

I don’t understand why the people aren’t getting sucked in the same way everything else is.

*lol* don’t question it. However, I do think Kanya’s pose in last panel indicates she’s feeling a pull, and is trying to stay where she is. The other dudes may be some of the last things moving, considering their position and lying low on the floor.
As for Mitch. He could be resisting and/or his powers might help him here. Just as he can make things light and movable, by touching them, maybe he can also kinda do the reverse and stay level.

That could be it. Or you could just apply Bellisario’s Maxim.

Hey there. Sorry to miss camping, but I’ve just arrived at my sister’s place after a 7 hour train trip. Now to take the dogs swimming down the beach…

Oh, Cory looks mighty upset. Hopefully Flyboy can get him to calm down. They might still be able to save Diego, and if nothing else… Well, at the moment Cory is merely lashing out. We wouldn’t want him to stew and start torturing people with his powers, now would we? (Hmm, does Cory even have the fine control to do the Scanners style head-asplode?)

I always liked the way Invisible Woman figured out that she could use her force field powers to create air bubbles in people’s hearts and then *pop* them. Talk about twisted minds.

too bad she doesn’t have my twisted mind. i’d make a bubble around the heart and shrink it to crush the heart to kill someone. or make a pulsing size bubble to pump the heart to save someone if they needed it.

and for those that seem indestructible, i’d put bubbles in their brain. it’s squishier than the heart and has a much better chance of stopping them in their tracks in the event that a heart bubble isn’t enough to stop them.

She’s thought of those too, she’s just not that big on murder.

Now you wish you followed the regulations and wore safety shoes and a hard hat.

I can’t get over the heartbreak of one’s brother being lost (even if he was responsible and being a tool) and you (Cory) have all this power and “THIS POWER” isn’t what is needed to save this particular day.

Suddenly, the fact that your asshole bro was using you doesn’t mean so much anymore. How many of us have siblings who have beat us (metaphorically or maybe not…) half to death over the years, but they are still our closest friends.

It’s rarely logical.

Me: Where is my super healing power? Feck, where is my stopping bullets power? WTF… why am I “super” powered, but not in any way that can save my brother right now…???? Feck feck feck…?

Feeeeeck me. That HAS to hurt on a primal level. I’ve had moments when I’ve thought my little brother was the biggest sphincter in the world… BUT if you f*ck with him… I’ll kill you.

Make sense? Of course not. He’s my baby bro. Logic has nothing to do with it. I can kick his ass, but YOU lay a finger on him and I’ll pound you (yes it’s crazy… family shite is crazy).

“Deserving”… has NOTHING to do with it when loved ones are involved.

It’s a universal thing. I’m a talented, smart person. So, why don’t I have the skills (powers) to fix THIS problem when it really matters?

Feck me. I really feel for Cory. I’m praying that AW has a pathway that helps Cory not turn dark. Not become Duncan.

I think this scene, in all its pathos, speaks to that idea. What makes any of us turn to the light or the dark. If I’m writing (and I know I’m not) I’d hope that Mitch can wrap himself around Cory and help him not go to the dark-side (sorry cliché alert) and become the man Duncan became due to circumstance.

In a way this is part of a perfectly a running theme. Kyle has amazing power. Spooky has amazing power. Here, Mitch does. Etc…etc…

The point being that anyone can be “Superman” — “the strongest man in the world” but that may not be “the power” that is needed to solve the crucial problem of this moment.”

Any of us who have had “young” relatives make stupid and horrible mistakes that leave them on the wrong side of the law and in terrible straits… well we understand this. I had a dear friend — drove drunk and killed a passenger in his car. Everyone was injured. He was injured. But that moment of a decent man making a horribly stupid, immature decision put him in jail for 8 months.

He was changed forever. I wouldn’t blame you for thinking “good, he deserved it” … except he was beautiful and gay and IN JAIL FOR EIGHT MONTHS… you can imagine what that meant.

He is very very clear that he’s responsible for his situation, and to his credit he never once tried to weasel out of his responsibility for the fact that he did something that could have happened to many of us. He was laudable… but I could tell that the eight months was a grim and horrific as any of us could imagine. He didn’t want to talk about it. Not because he’s gay, he’s very out and open, but because it was horrible and no one should experience it. I know that he was circumspect with me not out of shame, but out of care for me… knowing that I would carry that darkness. I’m sorry to say he was right and kind to me. I’m a big marshmallow.

I have taxi money in my boot every time I go out on the town… I think of him always. I will NEVER drive after drinking…

Okay, TL:DR, but these are the things I put in Cory’s head. He’ll never forget this. Not ever. And the (maybe foolish) idea that if he hadn’t agreed to participate… well maybe that would mean that Diego would be alive, No not logical… but we do these things. I fear for Cory. Sweet boy. Horrible circumstance.

I just wish and pray that Mitch can find a way to get him to Amanda or Spooky or anyone who can help him find a way out of the nightmare… so it doesn’t swallow him hole.

Really interesting connections between Cory’s situation and the other characters, I really appreciate the personal perspective, and your insight into the themes of this work. (I remember once talking to a teacher about spiritual powers — the kind that monks supposedly could do back in the day — and he said something that since has always resonated with me: “Wisdom and power are two separate things.” That’s something I believe.)

Mitch isn’t supposed to be Flyboy right now, he’s doing illegal off the clock stuff right now. Using just a first name is a lot harder to track than calling him Flyboy would be.

They don’t seem to have had any contact for up to three years. Maybe the short version of his name wasn’t used between them back then, and Cory doesn’t know (much) about the name Flyboy. He certainly hasn’t used it.
People go with a name they know, and here Mitchell is probably it. Now, if he had used both first and last name THEN we could talk about someone needing to remember code names 😉

It was a one year younger cousin that suddenly died about 2 years ago in a car accident but I can totally relate to Cory here with the emotionexplosion when you realize a very dear person of your family just dies totally unexpected…

It’s been nearly 2 years by now but especially the first few months were awful… it took a few minutes to even sink in, I was contacted via text message >_>’ and I stood there my own on the ohone screen and stood there, and stood there and then when it hit home somehow 3 days passed without me realizing…

sorry to even say it, but this could totally end up being the origin story for a super villain later on, who like so many, started out good but was dealt a rotten hand. like magneto. 🙂

I was thinking the same thing while I was reading it. I almost expected a speech bubble where Cory says who he feels is to blame and then how he’s going to make them pay. I was relieved when it didn’t happen, but with that last panel…maybe it’ll happen next page. o.O

This was when the bald guy in the jacket (page 7 bottom left) discovered his powers. The world has not been the same since.

Hmmmm Magneto’s an interesting one and may be not the best example. He’s one of the few super villains who (writer depending) isn’t necessarily a villain. He’s joined the good guys multiple times and it’s pretty easy to read him as…. the hero of a different story. Started out good and was dealt a rotten hand…….I’d actually go with the Pied Piper or Catwoman or most of Ras Al’Ghul’s kids. Pied Piper is actually probably the best for a YP comparison, given that it was a combination of his parents putting him through crazy-comic-book surgeries as a child and rejecting him because he’s gay that lead him to a life of crime. (He ends up rehabilitating, becoming BFFs with the Flash and sometimes getting a hot boyfriend.)

all the best villains are one’s you sympathize with, and who have believable motivations. when they’re just psychopaths who want to take over the world (how to train your dragon 2 style) it’s much less believable. anyway, all villains are the hero of their own story. when they become super likable , they just become Byronic Heroes — though they are still technically the antagonist. if you want a more clearly villainous character as an example though, let’s go with Darth Vader. 🙂
I know nothing about the pied piper beyond the creepy folk tale, but that sounds like a decent comparison for our purposes, from your description. Someone who tries to wipe out all of humanity definitely counts as a villain though. He’s just a complicated villain, like Duncan, which makes him interesting and flexible enough for a surprising storyline.

I guess, for me, the thing with Magneto is that it’s all so bound up in the civil rights issue with him. Yes he’s violent but (with most decent authors anyway) he’s not genocidal, he wants mutant rights and is pushing for a seperate mutant state because he thinks that humans will never treat mutants as people. I guess I find it easier to excuse/sympathise with Magneto because I know a little of how……being on the receiving end of that level of discrimination can feel. When the place you live has laws against what you are. The anger, frustration, desperation, helplessness and desire to do *something*, that’s all very clear and understandable in Magneto. It’s wrong but I can understand what drives people to become that. And it seems like more than ‘just’ a bad hand I guess? That it’s beyond bad luck and into…..a societal driving force encouraging Mags to either break, deny what he is or kick back hard. That make sense?
(Also totally read some of the Flash stories with Pied Piper or at least the handful of scanned pages where he comes out. Piper is great)

Yup, that’s why everyone likes magneto. I’m purely going off the movies, though, as I’ve never had money to buy purchasable comics. He definitely, in that first movie, tried to do something that would’ve killed every human in new york (though i think he wasn’t aware of that fact when he tried to do it). And yeah no, we’re *not* talking about luck with magneto. Even with this kid, I’m sure the situation he’s in has a lot to do with systemic issues in society. How did this good kid end up in this spot? Weren’t they in the foster system or something? I don’t remember off the top of my head, how their characters were introduced.

Anyway, now this young boy is the only one left in this situation, and he could get blamed for everything. Something he didn’t even want to be apart of and was coerced into. Flyboy can’t be a witness because he’d get in trouble for admitting he was there — so he could end up becoming an enemy of the boy, as Mitch might choose his own freedom over the kid’s. Cory may be viewed as a villain by the cops forever now, making this little emotional outburst of his making him look all the more dangerous. He could become ostracized because of the situation he was put in, and *made into* a villain by title — when all he wanted was a nice life with his brother (like magneto, just wanting a nice life with his parents). These are the thoughts that went through my head, and the reason I posted the original comment. I never said magneto was a perfect comparison, but I think he works well enough to convey my point.

more examples of villains that were actually just in their motivations, but using their motivations to justify villainous behavior:
– the son of that inventor from the second Iron man movie (I told you I can’t buy comics *sigh* ) who got ripped off when stark stole his idea and took credit, while he was dying in a war prison in a war that I think was funded by the starks as well. I may be wrong on some of those details. It’s been a while. It’s the whole terrorist debate (i.e. are we creating them? should we maybe think about why they’re so angry that they want to attack us?)
– the queen from aliens who was just defending her brood
– anniken skywalker just wanted enough power to protect the ones he loved the most

* In my “how to write a heroe’s journey” manual, it definitely has a whole chapter on writing villains as if they are the heroes to their own story. Like I said, if you sympathize with them as an audience, that makes the story so much more engaging/dynamic. Really the villain is the shadow-reflection of the hero. The path the hero could’ve taken had their hearts not been pure.
Super clearly cut lines (like the little mermaid and the ursula) make for dramatic stories, but moreso as an entertainment spectacle for kids, I think. Real people don’t operate that way. Not that there aren’t adult movies with super evil villains … I think they just tend to wind up as cheesier/campier films. * a disclaimer, those are all generalizations.

as a side note, it’s clear this whole comic is really playing with those lines between villains and heroes, with anni’s inner motivations and feelings playing such a huge role in this story. we’ve gone through all that stuff about how he’s really just an anarchist, and even Kyle can sympathize with that. And now he’s trying to save the world by destroying the world. this whole conversation is a very prominent theme here.

Not only is he clearly a much-loved big bro, but I don’t think he was bad at heart and could have turned his life around. In fact, this experience with getting in over his head and dragging his little bro into it could have been the catalyst for that.

Since you mentioned Joker, Batman also come to my mind.. or the first Robin/Nightwing. Guess ‘the birth of’ depends on which direction the future hero or villain goes after that one bad day that changes everything.

Which, I imagine has a lot to do with what kind of reactions and care they get after that bad day. After all, Batman is NOT a knight in shining armor, in many ways he really isn’t even a HERO at all, as much as an anti-hero. Actually, that is one of the major reasons that the Dick Greyson parted way with him and became Nightwing. Greyson just wasn’t willing to become as dark as Batman had.

Difference being that Batman had all the structure and support systems that came with his wealthy lifestyle, and Greyson ended up with all of that, PLUS Batman as a mentor and guide. Batman fell, not so far as to become a villain himself, but still he fell HARD. But he was able to cushion the blow for the kids that came after him.

Well, see, now there’s a debate because Bruce was VERY WELL taken care of when his parents died. Alfred became his father in everything but name. What drove him to become Batman was his obsession to find his parents’ killer and make sure he got his day in court. It was when his parents’ killer got a slap on the wrist and he saw all of the corruption that he created the character of Batman.

His parents cared about Gotham and he shares that sentiment. He never claimed to be a “hero” when he started out being Batman; he wanted to strike terror into hearts of villains. He wanted to be seen as a villain to villains. He never had any intention to be a hero, but a vigilante. His anger and deep rooted responsibility to his city always led him to don his costume.

When Grayson wanted more than wearing yellow and green (more responsibilities; seen as more than the sidekick), he actually got injured badly in the original series (before the reboots) and Bruce fired him. He had no choice but to form a new identity. It had nothing to do with becoming “dark like Batman.” Nightwing is crafted with darkness in mind, hence his name. The difference is he blends is natural talents as an acrobat and blending into shadows like Bruce to become Nightwing. Dick is actually a lot like Bruce in many ways (A LOT), but he’s his own person.

In the end, the reason I’ve always loved the Batman mythos is the Bat Pack (as I call them) is we can sit here all day and debate whether they are heroes, vigilantes or anti-heroes or a mix of them. They are that awesome (while we all know the Super crew are just plain heroes. Yuck. What fun is that?)

You make good points, but what I was thinking of was more along the lines that even thought Bruce had Alfred as family, he didn’t connect. Like, yes Alfred was a father to him and loved him as his own, but it wasn’t… the same. When Greyson came along, Batman (and yes, it’s Batman, not Bruce at this point, because we ALL know how he refers to himself in his own head, lol) was able go just that LITTLE bit extra for him that Alfred couldn’t, because he had already been there and come out the other side. The original story line would be a bit before my time, I’m more familiar with Tim Burtan’s Batman, Batman the Animated Series, and that time frames story line, and in that case it was written as more of a difference in ideology, yes Greyson wanted to grow and develop beyond Batman’s sidekick, but he also had deep disagreements with Batman’s actions at the same time. Ultimately Batman is a lot like The Dr, leave him alone for too long and he starts descending… Batman needs a Robin. But that’s one of the things I’ve always liked about Batman, as you say, the Batman Family grows, Bats isn’t locked in time like a lot of other heroes are regarding their personal relationships,

Robins and Batgirls come and go, grow up, develop their own methodes and eventually branch out on their own, all with the understanding that Batty Daddy is watching that they don’t ever cross that ONE line he laid down.

How old do you exactly think I am? Tim Burton’s Batman came out when I was born (so yea, maybe younger.) I read many of the Batman comics before my time (Teen Titans, original Batman from the Detective books) either online or when DC released collected versions and they were at the library. Well, that and a lot of Wikipedia.

One thing I don’t think people understand is that Bruce LOVES Alfred as a father. That wasn’t really shown until Batman R.I.P when Bruce “dies.” He literally calls Alfred Dad in his video “will.” It’s the damned saddest thing EVER because Bruce doesn’t show love like most people. Bruce is seriously overprotective of Alfred and it’s because he loves him so much.

In fact, Bruce loves all of his boys, it’s just….he has a very hard time with it because the things he openly loves die (read: his parents.) So, he stuffs it all down and distances himself. He doesn’t want to lose those close to him. It’s reinforced when he loses Jason and Damian and when Barbara gets shot. Yea, they come back but it look at how DARK he goes. He loves his Robins and his Batgirls.

Ultimately, he loves his kids even if they cross the “no kill” rule. Bruce hurts for Jason and wishes he wouldn’t kill, but he sees that Jason holds back as much as he can. For him, that’s enough because he knows how hard that is for Jason given his history (especially with the Joker. Hell, I’d have real ammo out around that crazy clown.)

Arguably, the Robin that has healed the most in his grief is Tim (considering the comics.) Dick still has some anger towards his parents’ killers; Jason is the angriest. Of the Batgirls, Barbara had gone clean to the other side when she became Oracle but, of course, DC had to eff everything up with New 52.

You know, I feel for Cory. His goal ultimately was to save his brother and in the end, he couldn’t do that. It doesn’t matter if we’re younger or older, it’s an unspoken truth that siblings always protect each other (we won’t discuss those RARE exceptions.) When we–as siblings–fail in this department of protecting our siblings from something, the guilt is horrible. It is worse than protecting someone else because it’s OUR FAMILY. We have this ingrained loyalty to them!

The problem with superpowers is that everything you feel on the inside sometimes shows on the outside….and that is Cory. All of the anger (and guilt) at himself (and probably Mitchell) just explodes upwards and inwards. He’s angry at himself more than anything else.

The thing about death and trauma is that you either become a better, resilient, stronger person or a bitter, resentful person. The one thing we can hope for Cory is that this trauma–after he’s mourned it properly–is that it propels him to learn how to control his powers and to become a better person.

This is why telepaths should never get angry.

Hello. I am currently hiding from the midday sun. I just got back from dad’s place and spending a drizzly morning helping him tidy up the garden.

Today was cold in the afternoon, dark and disgusting, with a slight drizzle.

Situation report: taking step-niece and nephew to beach.
I’m currently in the middle of one week rec leave up the coast, mainly because my high school 30th reunion is coming up this weekend, however it was also an opportunity to help the immediate family with spring gardening tidy-up before the heat of summer.
In addition, step-mum’s first husband was within past three weeks diagnosed with cancer, so all of their daughters have flown back home, including the middle one who emigrated to England. So in order to help during the stressful time, dad and step-mum have been doing grandparenting babysitting. This means that in the last half week that I’ve been around I have also been available for babysitting duties. And what do you in a warm spring with two under ten-year-olds who have flown across from England? You take them to the beach, for serious beach type swimming, and snorkeling, and chucking-tennis-balls-for-the-dogs, and jumping off the pier to see who can make the biggest splash. They’re all flying back down to Canberra this afternoon, so I hope they enjoyed themselves while they were here.

Nah, I’m not at the beach now. All the swimming was over the previous three days, and this morning I helped dad with tidying up before they left. I am, however, at my sisters place, and that’s within 5 minutes of the beach if the dogs get demanding about being taken for walkies/ball chasies/swimming.
