Angry, Kyle is angry. Do not trust Duncan one bit and no wonder, he’s been tricked before.

Duncan’s blank mind, for Amanda, must be something genetic since it works no matter his age and state of powers, or non-powers. Whether he’s still full powerless, besides that, is up to be cleared yet.

If the mental block was something Sircea did to Duncan for security (which would be sensible to do if Amanda’s powers are known to the super world at large), it would probably still be functioning.

You’re right. It could be a spell and not genetic.

Spooky might at least sense some aspects of it in that case, and maybe even lift the block.

Kyle has looked into those blue eyes before, and experienced how sincere they could look when the rest was a lie.

I’m carefully thinking Duncan could be telling the truth, but I’m not trusting until further on.

Although, roast Duncan does sound like a good dinner to serve Laampros. I wonder if he wants roast Duncan smothered in butter with rosemary or if he finds that offensive?

I notice in panel 4 that Young Duncan is still pretty buff for a 13-year-old. And I begin to believe that he isn’t lying. Are Kyle and Amanda going to play Good Cop-Bad Cop with this bewildered kid?

Wasn’t he to look like a 15-16 year old? Need to look at script again.

That’s not buff, that’s scrawny.
The boy needs to put some meat on those bones.

How the hell is that “scrawny,” especially – as they specified in the comment – “for a 13-year-old”? (Even if Duncan’s meant to look 15-16… though, he really does look younger than that.)

For a teenager (or anyone, really), he’s nowhere NEAR scrawny, unless he needs to look like The Rock to be considered acceptable. Or Marlon Brando.

I was the 145 pound, 6 foot scrawny kid at high school graduation and that’s what I looked like…

Wait.. unanswered question: has Kyle kept his newly created/borrowed empath ability to sense what emotions that is coming from others? That could give other results than Amanda’s telepathy when ‘reading’ Duncan, if he still has that when he tries.

Now I’m really waiting for next page, to see if this is answered or of this is Kyle not believing based on previous lies.

I was just about to wonder if his newly acquired demon abilities might allow him to tell when a person is lying and/or just a bad seed.

I think Kyle is just finally letting his anger at Duncan out now that he has the chance…but, it’s an interesting possibility, and now I’m curious to see what way this goes.

If he isn’t lying, teenage Duncan must be so scared right now. I mean, he probably already was because he was mildly injured, surrounded by chaos and doesn’t remember anything. But now he’s got a majorly angry fiery man screaming at him so he must be even MORE scared.

Screaming at him AND calling him a liar. It is the most terrifying thing to have my honesty called into question when I forget something as common as what I was going into a room to do, let alone… everything all at once.

Oh, Kyle… I know it’s been a long day but try to calm down okay? Okay. Good.

I’ve had another thought. Physically harming a legal child (below 18), is something adult Duncan with memories intact thought was crossing the line. He may even think deliberately frightening and threatening one not actively trying to attack you was crossing the line.

Kyle, you are better than Duncan! Don’t risk being worse!

Not that I think he will. Even if Kyle doesn’t think better of it, Amanda is right there. One bark of: “Kyle!” and he will meekly step down long enough for her to take charge. Kyle respects her leadership because he respects her.

I don’t know, I wonder if things have changed with Kyle’s recognition of his full powers. That “the rest of you” comment on p53 has stuck with me.

Kyle no!! D: ….granted Duncan has proved himself an EXCELLENT liar in the past, I’m not sure he is this time…and even if he is, he’s still a helpless boy now. Please don’t lose yourself to your anger Kyle :'( even if you deserve to be furious at him.
….on a side note, if he regains his powers AND proves to be lying again…I’m gonna walk away and tell Kyle to have fun instead.

I can understand Kyle’s reaction, but if Duncan’s memories are really wiped, there will be a point when it’s just pointless bullying, and that point is rapidly approaching.

I’m glad Kyle isn’t trusting him too easily. He has a lot of anger and it’s only natural he not allow himself to trust Duncan so easily. I’m wondering if Laampros’ deal meant Duncan would get younger without memories, and possibly powers, which is essentially an existential death.

That’s actually why I think little Duncan is not faking it. Giving the eternal youth and health asked for but taking away the memories which would have enabled you to enjoy said eternal youth and health because you forgot to specify you wanted to keep them seems EXACTLY the sort of thing a demon would do.

And it occurs to me that perhaps Laampros suspected Duncan and Sircea were doing this to fix the walls. Perhaps this was his insurance policy. They couldn’t fix those walls if they’d forgotten how or why they did this, could they?

Now that is a very plausible idea. Not just demon games with “be careful what you wish for”, but a tactical move.

Worse— what if he has the ability to form new memories taken? Eternally one hour old…

Congratulations, Kyle, Child Duncan is now terrified of you D: We’re gonna see tears on the next page if he’s not faking it.

Though I think Duncan would’ve had to come to, realize Laampros screwed him over in their deal, gotten the shock/panic/despair phase out of the way, realized his situation with the superheroes still there, and then planned/composed himself enough to lie – without knowing whether or not Commander would be able to see through it since he’s de-powered. Seems like a bit of a stretch!

Yeah, while not impossible I kind of doubt regenerated-Duncan pulled off that chain of preparation. This feels like a genuinely bewildered kid who’s just plain lost. One might even call him a ‘timid child’. 🙂

OK, so, either Kyle KNOW Duncan is lying because of some ability he just acquired, either he has to stop what he’s doing now. Yelling and threatening a 15 year old amnesic and already terrified child is seriously bad. Doubt should play in his favour. Which doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be seriously invistigated and monitored to discover if he is indeed lying.

Kyle was physically and mentally violated within the last few hours, he needs to let that anger out and not keep it inside and fester until it explodes into something much worse than just yelling at someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

There are better, and more ethical ways to do that than to aim it at a potentially amnesic 13-15 yo. So unless he knows for a fact, the past events do not make his approach okay.

And if Kyle were emotionally stable enough to think of that he wouldn’t be yelling in the first place.

Yes, just expect an 18-year-old who’s just been through the mental and physical wringer very, very recently to be perfect and rational and make the right choices when confronted with the person RESPONSIBLE for it.

Because that’s just how human beings work. They always do all the right things and have perfect judgement and reactions at all times, and they’re flawless in character. Especially teenagers! True story!

Yeah, well, but if you happen to be an 18-year-old with highly dangerous superpowers those very superpowers puta lot of pressure on you to grow the heck up if you don’t want them to turn you into a supervillain.

He’s not only yelling, he has a fringing ball of fire in his hand. This is physical threat and this is totally not okay if he’s not 100% sure he’s not doing it to a scared and amnesic teenager.

And we can be 100% sure he won’t be using that fire on the kid since even if he’s willing to go that far there’s a far more rational person right next to him.

We can, but Duncan can’t.

Yeah, his next few minutes won’t be fun. But then they wouldn’t have been anyway.

If Duncan’s telling the truth – he’s in the same position Kyle was a few years ago. Young teenager with no idea of who he is or that there’s Stuff in his past, or that he’s about to gain superpowers. That’s going to be a fun thing for Kyle to deal with once he calms down.

Yeah, on top of everything else Duncan was and did to him. I recommmed a therapy session or ten after this.

Kyle, I know you’re a naturally hot-headed guy, but this is not the time to jump to conclusions. First order of business should be finding out more about this.

Well, back from gaming. Immediately check Young Protectors for the update, and my first thought is: Huh, looks like Red Hot is going to loose his temper after all.

Then a fraction of a second later I go: Nah, I roll to disbelieve. Red is play acting to provoke a reaction from Annihilator that would give an indication of whether he’s truly amnesiac or not. The way he leaned towards Commander last page to ask sotto voce whether she could sense what was going on in Anni’s headspace is a good indication of this. As others have noted downpage, he’s playing bad cop.

(Although as ever I’m prepared to be wrong.)

I think that’s it, too. It’s what makes sense given the severity of the danger that they could be in if Duncan is faking and they *don’t* make sure, y’know? They are protecting the world. If they have to come off as assholes to do it right, so be it.

You base that observation on first meeting with a teenager that was/is the person who seriously hurt him several times in the last day? It’s not like he’ll just roll over and show love.

hmmmm… I might remember wrong but I was once told by someone if people wait to give an answer you should check in which direction their eyes go, if they turn to their own right it means they try to remember sth and if they turn to the left they are about to make a lie up… so if Duncan looks to his own left…. x’D

nah I don’t think it is like that for realz, he prob just had a look around, and I mean if he truly remembered himself then he’d prob keep his lying skills as well and I was also told that good lyers can control their eye movement soooo x’D

There’s something to it, but it’s not 100% accurate. People do tend to let the eyes look up to the left (eyes go up, not whole face) when their brain is ‘creating’ something, as in coming up with a creative story and/or a lie. Flickering gaze can be an indicator too. It’s harder to look someone straight in the eyes while lying.

Not perfect teller though, as the person can be nervous/scared for other reasons, so you have to combine with body-language and what you feel the ‘whole package’ tells you.

it may also vary for left-handers, iirc.

I didn’t know that. Just know that left brain half is the more abstract/creative one.

The left side of your brain process the right side of your vision (from both eyes).

Actually, the whole “not able to look at you while lying” thing is a pretty solid myth. People who are telling a lie they really want you to believe (vs. one they expect you to see through, or want to get caught in) make MORE eye contact than someone telling the truth. It’s so they can gauge whether you believe them or not. 🙂

This idea of what is myth and fact about liars is very dependent on person. It also depends on the person who executes the line of questioning. No one likes it when my dad interviews them as he can pick out a liar the minute he or she walks into the room. One of my favorite YT videos is by a former CIA agent who talks about lying and how she spots liars (which, by the way, is everybody.) It’s long for a YT video, but this shows you CIA training at it’s best.

Kyle might actually be able to tell better than amanda now if those demon senses Laampros set off for him are still functional.

Perhaps he can tell the person is lying, but not what exactly he’s lying about? And of course, lying to protect oneself from retribution and lying to cover up your weaknesses in a new/strange situation are both LIES even though the second is less evil that the first.

However, I DO believe that Duncan’s mind has been wiped to some degree. Panel two makes me think that Sircea is back, invisible, controlling him.

Laampros promised something like “and the same for your sow”. So what happens to Duncan probably happened to Sircea.

I can’t see anything in the deal with Laampros that would have meant wiping this asshole’s memories…

maybe not explicitely but if reverting to youth it might at least take the memories of all the things that happened after this point, then again if you meddle with a brain like this a short general amnesia might be very possible, it might be only temporary though
but ofc it is just another option, it can just as well be him trying to fool everyone, we’ll see ^^

FWIW I agree. I’m sticking with my perhaps-I’m-overthinking-it reasoning that it would please Laampros to make Anni suffer by knowing what’s happening to him and that he’s been reverted to a powerless state for a second time.

I came up with a couple of theories below this. First of all, there is the whole “Be careful what you wish for with demons and the Fair Folk because they WILL find loopholes and screw you over in deals. It’s kind of what they do.” Duncan forgot to specify with his perfect youth and health that he wanted to keep his memories, so nothing was stopping Laampros taking them. There is something poetic in taking away the only thing Duncan needed to enjoy the youth and perfect health he asked for: his memories of who he was.

Then there is the other idea: what if Laampros suspected Duncan was making this deal with a view to repairing the walls and ultimately send him back to hell? Wiping his memory so he forgot how to fix the walls, why they needed to be fixed and that they had to be fixed, would eliminate that threat neatly.

Hmmmm seems to me Duncan was “promised” eternal youth……and control of the world to do with as he pleased……in wiping his memory I see one huge breach of contract here……there will be court rooms and litigations for…..millenia……and remember no lawyers get into Heaven…..ergo the Demon WILL have representation in these court cases……this could get messy!

Not a breach of contract, it was never stated he’d retain the knowledge of the bargain. He’s still free to do as he wants, he just has no idea.

Naaw, not intentionally… But you see, human brains and Demon Lord brains work so differently, how was Laampros to know that the reversion to an earlier physical state would cause a loss of knowledge?

Duncan doesn’t remember he’s warm for Kyle’s form ( Laampros was not too pleased with Duncan for schtupping his kid) ….Duncan also does not know that he is the ruler of a continent…..or how to send Laampros back to hell…or how Laampros “burned” him on their deal.

Congratulations, Duncan, you have officially pissed off Kyle. One should not lie to the half-demon. LIES LIES LIES! IT’S ALL LIES! The shifty eyes and looking around give you away, Dunkie.

I hope Kyle doesn’t become the first of the new bullies who put Duncan back on the path to super villainy. He’s going to get a lot of abuse when the scientists start studying him like a lab rat.

I think this is the point where Amanda needs to step in and set a more rational course of action, such as getting Spooky to have a good look at Duncan’s state of mind and his possibly magical shield.

At the very least, she makes a pretty decent good cop to Kyle’s bad cop if we remember her first meeting with Spooky in the side comic.

Lowering the tone – Kyle is now 18, so I need not feel guilty about enjoying the view in the first panel. :->

Uh, yeah… at least in some comics, torture really works great.

But it is so hard to come up with a convincing confession when you don’t know what you are supposed to have done.

If Kyle isn’t careful, he might become the bully that sets the new Duncan on the path of villainy.

Unlikely, it’s not like Kyle’s going to follow him around making his life Hell. Kyle’s going to have a venting moment (the guy was abused and traumatised less than a day ago and has been holding all that back for the greater good so far) and then it’ll become clear whether or not Duncan is really lying. If he’s not lying he’s going to be getting an explanation that’ll show him the consequences of being a villain.

Even if Duncan it’s telling the truth, and TYP trust him enough to vouch for him… I don’t think growing up being barely tolerated and constantly suspected would do him much good. Same if the military takes him. Is there something like a witness protection program for supers?

Probably, and if Duncan’s being honest he could certainly use it since the ‘Then Let Me Be Evil’ trope is a common result of that kind of treatment. Just look at the Stargate series, that kind of treatment of Michael (the Wraith) resulted in him going from what could have been an ally into one of the greatest threats that they had to deal with. The last thing that they want is to turn Duncan back into a super-villain. Heck even if he’s lying he could and most likely would be doing it to get a second chance and be a good guy instead of what he became.

Yeah, as much as I love Carson, I really don’t think Michael should have been allowed to happen.

Particularly when they were shown managing to work together with Todd who proved trustworthy and was even willing to use the drug to try and remove his group’s need to feed on humans so that they would no longer be a threat. If they’d really worked with him they could have removed the wraith as a threat, at least as far as feeding goes. Without the need to feed on humans they could have advanced to a more cooperative level with humans.

Kyle is really taking his father’s powers to heart. Using them even when talking and making gestures! And his eyes light with fire when he’s pissed! He’s a lot more like Laampy than he wants to be, I’m guessing. Definitely took after daddy.

True…..but judging from the red hair…..I’m going to go out on a limb and say his Mom was a firey red head……everyone knows they have dangerous tempers!

In real life, Kyle entered hell 27 September and returned 8 November 2013.

Kyle is still carrying a torch for Duncan.

In their time, under 24 hours.
Kyle and Duncan arrived at his warehouse and the sun was setting. They ate, went to bed and Duncan did the speed. Kyle called the TYP headquarters {clubhouse?} the next morning just before sunrise and Spooky, Paul, and Mitch felt the car to pick him up from the warehouse. After their discussion, the page says 92 minutes passed and the entire team was standing by the airplane. It was late that day that the fight at the portal occurred and Laampros stepped through. So this is late in the same day after Kyle was used and abandoned. If it is evening and the sky is darkening, only a day has passed.

Red Hot has indeed had a busy 24 hours.

This actually relates to one of my small niggling worries. When Red defeated Laampros he had the scene where he was all “I’m no longer scared of my powers” and calmly competent at cutting his way into the diamond box. What worries me is that considering everything that’s happened in the past day, Red might simply be in shock, cruising on the adrenalin high, and within the next few hours will crash in post-traumatic stress. Now, that’s unlikely considering how close we are to the end of a story that Alex has word-of-godded that Red will get through in one emotionally healthy piece, but Commander doesn’t have that bit of meta knowledge and realistically should be considering the possibility.

I think he called the team right away, that is an hour or two after sunrise.

The time perspective feels so strange when you realize how little time has passed. For us it´s been years, but for Kyle only a few hours have passed since the betrayal. No wonder Kyle is still pissed of.

Now I’m just waiting for Kyle to yell “I’M NOT THE ONE WHO STABBED THE CAPTAIN WITH A PICKLE” and pass out.

Maybe while lighting Duncan up in the process. Blah blah “but he’s a pwecious chyyyyyyyyyyyyyld and he’s so kyooooot” who cares, he still essentially RAPED Kyle for his own gain. Unless Kyle’s not allowed to be upset about that. Which is a pretty shitty thing to imply.

He has not just been regressed to 15 or 16 years old, he does not even remember his name. And if Spooky’s story is any clue, this is permanent, or at5 least going to last years. That makes it a moot point whether he had already hurt those kids at this age or not.

But how did it happen? The deal, which Laampros can not break, included rulership of the Americas. Even if this means only that Laampros will not prevent them from ruling the Americas, amnesia does just that.

The deal didn’t say “immediate and enduring” rulership of the Americas. Maybe Laampros used that temporal loophole to grant him “eventual” rulership of the Americas, once he’s established his new identity as a clean-slate eternal teenager. Maybe he was the ruler of the Americas, from the time Laampros came through the gate to the time Laampros was pushed back through the gate.

I’m sure he has Laampros’ permission to rule the Americas. Oh? The other humans don’t recognise that authority? Not his problem.

I think that we are all waiting for some clarification of Duncan’s amnesia.

Actually it’s the second to last day tomorrow and to quote one of my teachers “We don’t want you here,” just it’s makeup testing for the final two days and the teachers don’t take attendance, this is actually more of a reason to go to bed,

I had a final exam in one college course that could not lower your grade but could only raise it. So it was worth taking to determine what I had to work on for Part 2 of the course.

Ah, yeah, I didn’t have any like that this year, I did have several nontraditional ones though, we’d apparently just be sitting in the cafeteria if we didn’t have anything to do and came anyways so,

My “non-traditional” courses were things like Metallurgy and Materials Science, LAW 101, and POETRY, and Philosophy 101…

I quickly learned that I hated law (dry as dust, boring as hell, and yet necessary for life) and the metallurgy was really fun.

That’s different… I had to do a number of odd and not to chemical engineering related things in my work life. They all have some relation to each other. Mostly mathematics. However, many subjects are made easy by being a good observer and seeing similarities to what you already know.

It was okay!
We were really slow at work, until there was 15 minutes left before we closed and then there was a non-stop rush. And we ended up being open 5 minutes after we were supposed to be closed, still waiting on clients!

That couldn’t have been fun, thank you for bringing food to camping anyway!

So… I’m having a problem with Disqus tonight.
You know how it’ll be like “(X) comments above/below” and has a little blue button to click when a new comment shows up?
Well…. It’s not doing that for me tonight. Because I was just about to comment that it’s been awfully quiet, but refreshed first and realized there were a lot more comments!
Is anyone else having that problem?
Or… Does anyone know how to fix it? Or do I just gotta wait for Disqus to not be a hot mess?

Seems to work for me since I showed up about 5 mins ago, but sometimes Disqus has gremlins that either cause issues for all or just some (may depend on device used). Sometimes it helps to close and re-open the tab and/or clear the cookies and cache. Other times it fixes itself after a while.

When your provider or your router resets your internet connection and you get a fresh outside IP address (the global one towards the internet, not the one within your local network), Disqus appears to lose the live connection; After that it’s actually necessary to reload the page to get it reconnected and live. At least that’s been my experience so far.

After taking Danish’s advice and clearing the cache and just exiting out of the page and coming back, it SEEMS to have fixed itself. Haha.

*Pheeew*.. the humidity just around sunrise, after a very rainy nigh, can be so awful even if the weather isn’t that warm or sunny. What a morning to wake up to.

I hate humidity…
But… my favorite thing ever is a morning after a rainstorm, where like even the clouds are still a little dark, and the grass is still wet… but the sun is shining above the horizon and everything just feels so… fresh? Is that the word? I love that feeling.
But… I can really only get that in the spring or the fall, because the summer heat and humidity kinda ruins that feeling. Makes it so uncomfortable!

Every Tuesday nights, I watch GENIUS, the story about Albert Einstein and the scientific world. Tonight is the start of WW1 which Einstein didn’t aid (he was a lifelong anti-war person) and also figuring in is Fritz Haber who developed a process to make ammonia from air.

The nerd in me is doing its happy dance.

I’ve heard of that show, but I have yet to watch it!

Einstein’s personal life was a soap opera.
His scientific works are fun to watch dramatized because of the brilliance of his thought experiments.

The Haber Ammonia process is the beginning of all our modern high pressure manufacturing — Plastics molding, extrusions, catalytic hydrotreatment in refineries. All that stuff that makes modern life possible.

Yeah, that’s really cool. I’m definitely going to have to watch it.
I’m not much of a TV watcher… so I hardly watch anything… Once Upon a Time, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are like the only things I really watch. Haha. But I am really interested in that show!
