Of course I find it interesting that Cory doesn’t want the money but when Mitch tells him he wouldn’t give him money Cory takes it personally. A bit of a conundrum there.

It’s a pride thing. He doesn’t want to accept charity, but when he was told he wouldn’t get any money, he felt he wasn’t even good enough for charity. Or something like that.

A vicious cycle.

Cory is in a rather deep dark hole.
He’s been thrown out of his house for just being himself (take your pick – powers or kissing) and thrown away, cast out, (whatever you call it) for nothing more than being himself. Then the only person to offer friendship and some structure – Diego – is a criminal and almost dies thanks to his rather inept (justifiably so) powers. But he knows Diego was using him. There’s a little bit of Stockholm syndrome going on here, too.
So he’s going to take a little time to figure it all out and get his head back to right.

So exactly true… it may take a LONG time for the full heal, but, for sure, a “bit of time” to get Cory’s head moving in the right direction.

I agree that as of RIGHT NOW, Cory is probably all over the place. Somewhere between sure he’s going to jail and wishing someone would take him home and make him cocoa… 😀

Me too. One qualifier, I wouldn’t buy the whole “sexual tension” thing. The ‘going for it like rabbits’ thing I’d believe. However, that small quibble aside, the hiding crazy powers from neighbors has 1970s sitcom all over it. Do that! 😀

Spooky will make a great dad. You cannot really deny that Spooky is the “dad” despite Tsu-Tsu being second-in-command.

Sorry Doki, I liked my dad just fine, but I just can’t associate my Spooky (my sorcerous, adorbs, love puppy) with “dads” in general just now. I’ll have to leave that to you. For me, I can work with “wise older bro,” but that’s about as far as I can go…

I don’t feel the need to nuclear familiize them. I agree that someday, if he wants to, he’d be a great dad. IDK? Kids aren’t for everyone, we’ll see. That said, please ignore me and head canon them in any way that works for you!

I don’t think Cory needs father figures for a while anyway. That’s not been the best association for him lately. However a good dose of “welcome,” “TLC,” “safety,” “acceptance of the gay” and a feeling of “home” might do him the most good just now.

As I said, I’m a sucker for HEAs… and cuddles… 😀

I mainly put mom and dad in () to help get the tone right for what I was trying to convey. When typing it had that hesitating-questioning tone most often used when addressing parental units when asking for something big.

I strongly suspect that is coming. If I was wrting this, Cory would say no at first (because it sounds like charity) until Mitch tells him why he made the offer:

“I love you”.

Then kisses, hugs, blushes, etc.

(As for abandoning Diego… I suspect he’s going to need medical attention for some time. So Cory would either have to go it alone, or be forced to go back home. Neither is a really good outcome for him).

Now, if Cory should join the YP as well (as opposed to just living with Mitch’s family), what should his codename be? I somehow doubt “Cuddles” will be acceptable. 😉

And using a name from a different system/hero is not as problematic as one would think. A word cannot be copyrighted – a word as applied to a certain thing can be. Copyright of a hero name would have to balance 1) the “powers” (I prefer “talent” myself) of the hero, 2) the representation of the hero (costume, appearance, real name, etc.), and 3) whether the two heroes could be confused and/or interfere with merchandising.

Cyclones are a pair of twins in Pack of heroes. Not at all confusable with Cory.

Cyclone was also a Marvel character, but I think he was killed off years ago.

You are actually thinking “trademark”. You cannot copyright a name or description.

You are correct that “super hero” is trademarked. However, many companies file copyrights on a word that they use for a product or a brand. “Kleenex” was copyrighted until that was struck down and it was refiled as a trademark.

Why is he not in the Young Protectors? I mean at the time of the main storyline. He needs help with those powers. If he applies for one of the official teams right after this mass destruction, someone is bound to connect the dots.

I think he could be useful in many ways. If his powers can be better controlled, of course. Holding back a rockslide, getting a building about to collapse to fall in the safest direction, breaking a buildup of whatever that is blocking a stream. The possibilities are endless. Come to think of it, how useful are Kyle’s powers for finding a lost child in a forrest?

His powers go mostly under the rescue part in Search and Rescue 🙂

Good point, all about context I suppose. But (as far as we know) Kyle can control his powers pretty well and Cory admits he’s having trouble. The potential help he could be has to be weighed against the potential to make things worse.

And you also should weigh in the fact that Cory needs the kind of mentoring and education that the YP can provide. Cory’s powers (gods, I hate that term) are not that different than Kyle’s and Gordon’s, except in effect. All are ‘kinetic abilities and just as easy to get out of control. And all three have similar training regimens.

Good reference about Kyle. We know his powers manifested violently and caused grief with his foster family. And, you are right, even in the first part of the story, he shows impressive control as he sucks up that building fire.

So clearly, learning (like always) is more than half the challenge.

I feel that Cory would politely decline, not because he doesn’t appreciate it but i can’t see Cory leaving his brother alone. Diego has a drug addiction and his moral support is Cory. I believe after Diego get his shit together, Cory would definitely enter to YP 😀

*big puppy eyes* “Amanda [Mommy]? Spooky [Daddy]? Would it be okay if my friend from when I was a child moved in?” *blinks and eyes get impossibly bigger* *lips quiver* “His parents were really, really mean to him after they found out he and I had superpowers. They forced him to stop being friends with me [sniffs], beat him, [sniff sniff] and tried to force him to use his powers for their own gain! He had to get away! So, he found his brother and well, he wasn’t much better and they ended up homeless. AND WELL, they got into a bitofasituationwiththemafiabutit’sokaybecauseIhelpedthembuthereallyneedsahome. And thus, Cory becomes a guest–not member–of the Young Protectors because, well, Amanda and Spooky have to scope him out. After all, you can’t just TRUST somebody because one of the team vouches for said person. I’m sure a new person has to be looked over physically and psychologically to make sure they’re sound first and then they are given guest quarters.

I wonder who will be in charge of the physical “looking over”. Mitch, is that your hand waving in the air?

He would be too close to have an unbiased opinion if Cory was physically sound to be a hero. To snuggle with? Sure. To give a professional opinion? Uh, no.

He’d at least try to sit in on the examination to ensure his friend’s, erm, safety.

Well, true, for a physical exam. But Amanda may not allow him in for a psychological/mental exam. Mitch may skew the results.

Turning our head to cough can be quite traumatic without a “good” friend to help you through it. 😀

It would really depend, wouldn’t it? I went with superpowers because often kids don’t question their own sexuality until they’re pre-teens or teens (note the qualifier “often” here. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen.)

Depending on the universe, powers develop at just about any age or under certain circumstances. So I put powers because it seemed more plausible. The stressors Cory had would have pushed powers out and whatever home life Mitch had might have pushed his too. These two have very strong mental powers for kids so young as does Amanda. A running theme we see between Amanda and Mitch is both have parents who work very long long hours in very high social positions where children often feel neglected or ignored from that parent. They want to know what that parent is thinking, feeling or why they won’t spend time with them. I’ve always wondered if a bit of each of the YP’s superpowers aren’t shaped around their social situation and how that person felt; part of it must be DNA but the other bit is social context and psychological. Amanda wanted to know what her mom was thinking because she was lonely, Mitch was lonely too and so he thought, “If only I could be a fly on Dad’s operation room”… /here goes Katie and her theories

I think my father (who was actually a very accomplished scientist) worked long and hard in the lab to develop a super-son. Unfortunately my greatest super-power seemed to be ANNOYING THE CRAP OUT OF BOTH MY PARENTS and being super GAY.

I don’t think it was quite what he expected. Still, I live as a cautionary example to all parental scientists who are tempted to experiment with the destiny or their progeny. 😀

I am an Army kid. My dad was first a paratrooper (Aka those people that jump out of airplanes) and then he became a Secret Squirrel (aka professional hacker.) Long, hard hours and he was often gone.

Being Autistic means my parents got a curious, troublesome, artistic child that was very introverted around new people and in new situations that happens to be take honesty to, well, an extreme level and I really don’t get jokes for the most part. I’m equal parts enjoyable and difficult.

How honest am I, you ask? I once asked a lady why she was getting a medium sweater when she was clearly an extra-large. I was 10 and my mom had to save me by saying I had autism. Honesty is a good policy and all, but beware the autistic. No filters were added when I was being made in utero. Super powers: ability to calm down the most fearful dog/horse and biting honesty.

Who could have an unbiased opinion on Cory?

I highly doubt Amanda or Spooky does physical examinations of the team. I’m sure they have a trusted physician (probably with background work in superheroes) that does physical examinations. It would be very weird if your commander or second-in-command did your physical.

I’m sure Amanda does the mental evaluations which makes sense. After all, she has telepathy. But for her to do a physical? That wouldn’t work. You need someone with a medical background.

I would not be so sure. Spooky can look deeply into your body with no need of harmful radiation or other unpleasantness. But I was thinking of the psycological part. Cory is just too cute to reject.

However, that was tounge in cheek. Actually Amanda is very professional, and would not be swayed by a pretty face.

I trust you Klaus… if Amanda can avoid looking “deeply into Spooky’s body” than she is by far a much more ethical and upstanding individual than I am………….. (*okay that didn’t set the bar as high as I intended, LOL.)

With that last panel I just want to hug them both, and not in *that* way.

[Back from rpging; Boots up computer and first task is to check Young Protectors. Looks at page.] Well, that’s… a thing.

[Waves hands to try to the clear the air of all the subtext; Fails spectacularly] Y’know, I wasn’t expecting Flyboy to propose.

Ahem.
However (and there’s always a ‘however’) I’ve noticed that this fandom has a tendency to jump to soppy conclusions. I do not exempt myself from this. So I ask the question: “What would a modern Disney Princess do?”

[Rant mode: on] No, seriously people. Time was when the story structure would assume a Jane Austin era socio-political dynamic, and whoever it was in Cory’s position would immediately jump at the offer the Flyboy has just made in order to get some security. (Or seems to have just made. Based on Alex’s skills at faking us out, I agree with many other commenters and think Flyboy is actually offering Cory help in getting into a training program – preferably with the Young Protectors so that they can be together. I seriously doubt if he’s offering to be Cory’s sugar daddy.)

But – to get back to my main point – stick this in a modern Disney movie. Change the genders to a more traditional m/f dynamic. Acknowledge that Coraline’s position is really crappy, that without a helping hand it’s likely to end badly, and that Flyboy’s offer may very well be the best Happy Ending she’s likely to ever get. But even as we acknowledge that this is a happy ending, don’t you still have a small sour taste at the back of your mouth as you wonder whether society could be just a bit more just, so that there was another, better happy ending? Wonder, perhaps, whether we could finagle a way for Coraline to retain a bit of her self-determination? Yeah, that. Now flip the genders back to the boy’s love version we have on our screens and take it from there. [Rant mode: off]

The thing I’ll be interested in seeing is exactly what Flyboy is suggesting. As I’ve said before, observing Flyboy over the course of the stories indicates that he’s got a fascinating personality where he sometimes acts with maturity beyond his years and at other times like a self-absorbed teenaged boy who resents being treated as a kid. I think it’s part of Alex’s skill of creating ambiguous and complex characters to keep his readers returning to find out what happens next. It’s possible that Flyboy has anticipated Cory’s reluctance and has marshalled his plan and arguments with the same level of empathy that he showed to Red Hot. Offering to help him into a training program, and maybe even help Diego into a job and a drug program would be the obvious options. On the other hand maybe Flyboy is still besotted with Cory, and his hormones are leading him into doing something incredibly stupid, like offering to be his sugar daddy. So, yes, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll all be tuning in on Wednesday to find out.

Totally interesting thinking and linking. So you’ve prompted me… some thoughts below:

• It’s 2015 and this is not the classic m/f romance model. Alex is anything BUT traditional in his plot paths unless he’s truly referencing a genre staple for some purpose. So, I hadn’t at all jumped or linked my thinking to the classic rescue.

• As gay “men” however young. Neither of these dangerous young men were brought up on the patriarchal bull-sh*t of a woman needing a man to save them. So, again I (personally) didn’t jump there. I don’t think it would have occurred to them. It all happened so fast. There really hasn’t been reflecting time yet… and fifteen year olds don’t always do a great deal of deep thinking… or at least not on the issues they should.

• I’ve helped all kinds of friends in my single days that I thought were cute. Some needed a couch, or a little cash, or just an ear. Even finding some attractive, at that moment most of us can be human enough to keep our horny inner selves on the back shelf and provide support. I know the sex-crazed gay man is the cliché, but I don’t think that’s any more real than most everyone’s stereotypes. I read only concern and care from Mitch’s stunningly beautifully drawn ‘concerned’ expression in panel #3.

• I do understand your mention that yaoi fandoms do tend to instantly romanticize and/or sexualize, because that’s one of the elements most people love ABOUT the genre. However, I don’t READ it on this page.

*** Don’t get me wrong Saxon. I loved your Disney analogy, very sharp, but I’m having fun thinking about what I ended up thinking about because I NEVER went a traditional route here.

• I do agree that nothing on this page makes me think Mitch is in anyway thinking like an older gay man would. I.e. “sugar daddy”. I just don’t see him (as a character) having any of that life experience or personality type. When he’s as old as Duncan and just as handsome, he may have a relationship with a “Kyle” type… except instead of hell. He’ll fly him to the moon.

I agree with you that nothing today precludes a future when both these boys are more settled, but that’s a big if. It’s easy to evolve into a friendship. Despite the power of first kisses, who knows what Mitch is lusting after today in his life or in his future. It will be fun to see.

Mitch did have a lot of time to think about things while Cory was in the hospital with Diego.

Gay Homeless teenagers do need saving, and thats without world-destroying super powers. I think this is realistic.

Yes. Absolutely.
Having had time to sleep on it, I think I’m complaining about the means rather than the end. And while that’s still important from a story-telling sense, it’s a second order of importance. Nevertheless, I’m still hoping for Flyboy having reasons that are… well, not totally un-selfcentred, but far more interested in Cory’s practical welfare than anything else. In that regard, I do appreciate Doki’s reminder that Flyboy had a long time while waiting to think over his next move.

Whoops. I missed camp. DID wake up at normal time but, being tired and waking with a mean headache, I obviously also managed to turn my alarmclock off and fall asleep again very fast. Woke up hours later to it being daylight outside, and a vague memory of being awake >.<

It may be me still being tired, but am I the only one who thinks that with ‘come home with me’, all Mitch is thinking about here is taking him home to his actual parents? No YP as of yet. I admit to being a bit slow right now (on high dose of headache meds), so maybe that IS how everyone read it too xD

Mitch’s parents ‘always liked Cory’, and his dad got a surgeon to come and help Diego at insta-notice, so I think it’s pretty safe to say they would be up for the idea for helping Cory too. At least, his dad would but I don’t think it’s him only.
Then later Mitch could air the idea to Amanda of possibly getting a 2nd junior member, if Cory would be interested – when he doesn’t exactly HAVE to explain how they met up again…though I expect that if Mitch goes there, and try to get Cory into YP then he’d be honest enough to ‘fes about it.

Oh, and Cory confirmed it here. Mitch is from a high status and well loaded family. Now I’m curious to what category, as in what background, he comes from.

Hmm. That’s one interpretation I suppose, but not the one I jumped to. Flyboy says “stay with me”, which on a casual reading implies a long-term/permanent arrangement. I like what you’re suggesting, but I needed to stop and think in order to reach that space.

I think that Cory lives with his parents, at least some of the time. Just like Paul lives somewhere, maybe with his parents (that’s how I enterpreted Kyle and Duncan’s convo in chapter 2), and how at least Kyle and Spooky have their own place outside of the YP headquarter. They take turns in having the nightshift at ‘the office’.
That’s another reason I think ‘stay with me’ is Mitch’s home-home. Him not living at the headquarter a lot of the time also explain how he’s able to do his little side business without being detected.

I hope he says yes, I think it’d be good for him. But, there’s also Diego. I don’t think Cory would just leave him so easily. Especially now that he’s been so seriously hurt, but I think he might refuse to leave him even if this hadn’t happened. So, unless this offer somehow is able to extend to Diego, I’m expecting Cory to say no. Now…once Diego is conscious, he might be able to convince Cory to take the offer, if he finds out about it. But, I dunno. Looking forward to finding out how this plays out!

One could also think of it this way. Cory (with Diego in the hospital) has no where to go. There is no reason he can’t go with Mitch and yet still be there for Diego, visiting the hospital as much as necessary. They aren’t mutually exclusive things.

Diego CAN’T take care of Cory just now, so that would make Diego’s life easier. I agree that Cory won’t abandon his brother, but right now he’s more a worry and burden for Diego, who’s not that much older and clearly in no shape to protect, feed or care for Cory (or help him with is super issues).

So, it’s possibly a very good thing all around.

Wouldn’t government child care services have to intervene in this case since Cory is a minor? And if Cory’s the reason Diego is sober half of the time, will he slip back into the habit when he no longer has to take care of his brother?

So, would govt. “child services” have a program that could contain fledgling supers? One that’s not just a prison? Would they have the resources? It’s just a question, as this IS an AU.

I will say that my experiences of people and addiction, of any nature, is that what happens NEXT on that front with Diego is entirely up to him. Friends and relatives are important, but only the individual can truly wrestle with their own addiction.

This event may turn Diego around (essentially scare him straight, as he almost lost Cory) or he will continue the downward spiral and nothing Cory can do will really effect that. Most often relatives who try to support, mid-stream, are often just enabling… no matter how good their intentions are.

Other than point Diego toward a good rehab program, there isn’t much a younger brother can do.

Maybe the Young Protectors and other teams that accept super rejects are part of those programs? The programs would have to be bigger than that and maybe include foster families that are willing to accept supers or other kind of places where they can live, among other things. Then there’s also the question of what does the goverment do with those who can’t or won’t adapt to those programs.

About Diego, I hope he does get scared enough to stop.

I could see that within those huge government bureaucracies, there could quietly be groups the TYP that specialize in young supers with challenges in society. The govt. goal is easily to prevent the Duncan’s of the world from slipping through the cracks and falling in with the wrong sort.

Look what Spooky went through. Amanda is a very savvy and empathetic telepath. I could easily imagine she has a deep understanding of very young supers who have family issues and works with her mother and Spooky to keep TYP on track and help the ones who need it to grow up healthy and happy.

After all being a super (like being gay) is clearly not a choice in this AU. These kids need help dealing with what is unignorable in their lives.

They would be involved, but not necessary interfere. If it can be shown that the home that wants him is appropriate, in his best interests, and one he wants, they could give it a rubber stamp.

Some sort of official custody/guardianship would be required for virtually any official purpose (school, medical care, etc.). In a lot of jurisdictions, Child and Family Services (the agency above Child Protective Services) would be more likely to approve the placement than not.

There would be some individual workers and possibly agencies in some areas that would disapprove as a matter of course. But the agencies in California have already had enough black eyes in that regard that they won’t jump to make assumptions that the home isn’t appropriate. And too many California legislators watch CFS/CPS for the slightest misstep in that regard, so they have to be careful.

By default, they’d allow it, until they find something to question. And even then, they would proceed carefully, unless it was an allegation that places the minor in direct danger.

And before anyone jumps my shit about this, read my novel. I’ve done my research.

That sounds reasonable. I have no idea how these kinds of goverment departments work on my country, much less in the US. (I did read once about cases in Arizona where child care services split families for trivial reasons, but I don’t know anything else on the subject).

Do you know if there would be any kind of legal consequences for Cory and Diego’s biological parents? Will the goverment agency responsible try to make Cory go back home again or that’s not an option since his father battered him?

I’ve felt that a few times and, yup, it makes me cry. It’s not easy having a good friend who is a “frickin’ prince of the whole world.” Oh I know!

I had (have) a few friends like that. With looks and money. It took a long time to realize that, while some things “seemed” easier, they were just as worried and conflicted as I was about the real-life issues. I understood it even better when I found my long-term partner and watched my seemingly ‘privileged’ friends have to learn how to be happy for me.

Harder to understand when you’re that young. Slightly easier when you’re older.

Why is everyone so quiet tonight?

Well I just finished dinner.

Mine was a big pork chop.

Had Parm fish and asparagus.

I had to stop eating fish before someone discovered how to cook it with cheese of any kind.

Is cheese a problem?

Yes, I’m lactose intolerant.
However, my great thrills in food are turkey stuffing and braised meats.

The best part of Thanksgiving is the stuffing.

I had 4 leftover portions. My niece and I made two big dishes. She made it with sausage and I made a plainer bread stuffing with ground meat. Last night I stuffed the other pork chop with the leftover stuffing and feasted again.

Mmmm. I didn’t make enough stuffing this year. Humph.

Onion, carrots, and celery are some of the basic building blocks of many dishes and sauces.

You don’t have to eat them, no one has to eat anything they don’t want to eat, but they do hold a lot of nutritional value (vitamins, minerals etc) as well add a certain amount of flavors and such to the foods we cook.

I watched Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe. just for funsies tonight.
I got tired to politics and I finished the book at hand.

Before email I was watching sports team play their game. They successfully scored more than the other sports team!

I’m not a great sports fan. I pay attention but I don’t like the announcers on TV. All that talk is just endless drivel to me.

I tend to feel that way about the national broadcast commentators, but not the local commentators for this particular sport. They are actually a lot of fun.

That is a fact. There is a statistician in the tech trailer who is feeding absolutely pointless trivia into that sports anchorman’s earpiece. “Many people don’t know that this is the 42nd bat that Jose has used in this season…”

I mean honestly. Who needs this? Like art, sports is much better when some goof doesn’t attempt explain it. 😀

I had a pretty fun dream last night. I was at this amusement park and I ended up with a big group of people that the park management had picked as volunteers for doing promotional photos for their advertising. So there was a lot of us doing fake-candid poses, like acting like we were laughing at something. And they’d closed off the area of the park we were in to the general public, so we got to go on all these rides with practically no wait at all.

Also one of the rides was like a tram thing that took you through this (nature-type) park, and I got to see all of these beautiful tropical birds, including big toucans!

Sounds like the Animal Kingdom in Disney.

Possibly, although I’ve never been there.

I was there in 1998 (not that recent) and it was a game reserve and other stuff. They took people own rides through it.

The one in my dream was more tropical than savanna in climate, as I recall.
