What a revolting development that is! Just when you thought life couldn’t get more complicated — it did.

Life is complex. It has real and imaginary parts.

Uhm. Okay, if I didn’t know better I’d guess that Alex was using the advice of pulp author Raymond Chandler that when you’ve written yourself into a corner you have a man armed with a gun walk in.

Could this be the person that we readers have been speculating might be trying to coerce Anaado into betraying Spooky?

She has the knee and elbow protrusions Kyle sported for a short time when he was dealing with Daddy.

Would Ikaroth recognise Spooky as ‘the Abomination’ in the way that Laampros would? I can’t recall properly, but didn’t we hash out that it was probably his ability to do magic that made Laampros see him like that, and therefore in his current de-aged/de-powered state he might be ‘invisible’ for that purpose?

She recognises him as human. I wonder what experience she has with humans.

Could she actually be sensing her offspring, Kaal, through Anaado?

Well, that was certainly an interesting thing to have at the top of my DreamWidth reading page this morning. O.O

I briefly thought “Kyle’s mother?”, but it’s been suggested all the way though that Kyle’s part human. That doesn’t rule out more interesting ways to achieve that, but the most probable is that his mother was at least semi-human. Of course, this could be Granny…

His paternal grandmother, maybe.

But very convenient for the little demon, now he don’t have to answer right away, and can think up a good lie to feed our little hero

Something I should have noticed earlier – but didn’t because I am waaay out of practice at looking at the character names listed under Alex’s author notes – is that this is Ikaroth. (Everybody wave ‘Hi’ to Ikaroth)

Something else I should have noticed earlier but which everybody else seems to have grokked automatically is that Ikaroth is female, or at least female shaped. (I was too busy looking at the design of her face and head to stare at the shape of her chest or crotch, awright!? I saw a vaguely manga design for the head and kinda assumed from her lithe body that she was a rather bishonen guy.)

The final something else I should have notice waaay earlier is the format of the demon names. I didn’t consciously register that Velliok (name checked back on chap.3 p.4) didn’t have the double ‘a’ in his name either. Is it possible that only bright red demons with horns have double ‘a’? If Kyle had asumed his position as Laampros’ heir, would he have adopted the name Kaale? Does the shared ‘k’ in Velliok and Ikaroth mean that these two share some factor as well? [Re-reads script for chap.3 p4. Hmmm.] Okay, reeaallly long bow here: The script says that the prision Velliok kept Anaado in was made of sharp glass shards. I originaly took Ikaroth to have aspect of ice (the flat white colour, donchaknow), but might we interpret those pointy clusters at her knees, elbows and shoulders as glass shards as well?

Any relation to Ikaros?

Velliok at least has a double letter. Ikaroth does not even have that.

Yes, that occurred to me too. But then I wondered whether *just* a ‘double letter’ in the name was too unsubtle as a grouping indicator. Perhaps there are differences between single, double and even triple consonants and vowels, specific combinations of different consonants and vowels, and other sound formations that I, as a non-linguist, don’t even have the correct names for. Heck, maybe the ‘o’ in Velliok is silent and when pronounced the two of them share the ‘ik’.
But basically, it’s all random speculation as my ape brain tries to do the pattern recognition thing.

Looking at this demon-language linguistically, it mostly uses English phonemes, with a few exotic flourishes that sound vaguely like Hebrew or Greek or something . The double-a is visible in the romanized text of the comic, but we can’t be sure if it reflects some sort of long / short vowel distinction (like in Sanskrit) or just two “a” sounds that happen to be next to each other in a word and not elided (but perhaps separated by a glottal stop or something that is not reflected in the orthography). Conceivably, it could just be a decoration. I have to assume that the demons are not really using the roman alphabet (so this can’t reflect spelling convention), but the demons do seem to take human-adjacent form, and so use a language that can be spoken by the human palate. (Some of the vowels might be difficult for very large demons, given the size of their throats, but perhaps the air is thinner in hell!)

It could be that the entire “demonic” language that we see in the comic (like the human shape of the demons themselves) is just an artifact of the medium, done for the sake of drama, and that the demons are “really” communicating in some way that does not lend itself to being recorded in human-comprehensible form. (Much as the “aliens” of Star Trek and Star Wars are portrayed as anglophone humanoids.)

EDIT: It occurs to me that a double-a could be used to indicate stress, but “Anaando” and “Laampros” would be read by anglophone readers the same way if written “Anando” and “Lampros.” The latter could be explained as an attempt to avoid the English word “lamp.” Which reminds me of a Russian friend, whose name could have been romanized as “Semyon” or “Simeon,” but the passport office chose to render it as “Semen”!

Maybe names varies from each hell dimension? Or the type of demon.

Or the double a could be a different vowel altogether. It used to be in my native Danish, though that sound is now written å. (Note BTW that Anaado has only one n).

It would be so awesome if she were Kyle’s mother. I know it’s been insinuated that Kyle is half human, but I honestly can’t see Laampros stooping so low as to mate with a human “maggot”. This “ice queen” from Hell seems his style. And it would maybe awaken Kyle’s OTHER powers…if he has any. It would be cool if he power over ice AND fire. Kyle…the REAL Song of Ice and Fire!

For destruction ice
is also great
and will suffice.

Was this Anaando’s plan all along? Maybe the body switch was never the plan, and the real goal was he made a deal with this creature to give up Spooky? He seemed surprised when Spooky agreed so maybe he was worried his stalling wouldn’t work.

Whaaaaat? I had to check that I hadn’t missed a page, this demon’s appearance was so out of nowhere! We shall see what comes next.

Seems a little Deus ex machina. Well, not exactly Deus.

And that’s why #1 thing to do was to bring Spooky back to his real age and power! To not be mistaken for a “humannn cuuuub”‼ Or does she consider any human under 100yo to be a cub?

How old is she? Or is it indelicate to ask a lady’s age?

While I agree with you, I wouldn’t tell her that to her face.

Some people don’t consider “lady” to be a compliment, and I have a feeling creatures from Hell would be part of that contingent.

If you can’t ask her age, then ask her what she weighs.

That’s an interesting character design. Very Brom meets Guillermo Del Toro.

She’s named Ikaroth, according to the tags, which is not the name of the demon who had Anaado imprisoned (that was Velliok), although given their shared fondness for crystals, they could be related or married or living in (cardinal) sin. 😉

Cardinal Sin was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of the Philippines from 1974 to 2003. He seems to still be alive.

Actual “cardinal sins” refer either to the so-called seven deadly sins (which have changed over time) or in Judaism, to the three sins which one is expected to die rather than commit:

sexual misconduct such as incest, adultery, or bestiality

Of the Christian version of the cardinal or “mortal” sins, the list was revised to move “despairing sadness” aside in favor of “envy” in keeping with the original analysis of “sadness at the happiness, property, or good life of other people.”

I suspect that in this hell, demons do NOT live together in anything resembling marriage or actual alliance.

New reader here. Found TYP through the ComiXology sale, when I picked up the book. Read it in one sitting, and immediately wanted more. Researched it and found this site, and I spent the entire afternoon catching up. Now comes the excruciating part–waiting for the new releases.

This is a phenomenal comic book from both the story and art perspective. As a gay man, it has been really terrific to see the intertwining of sexuality in a superhero book, and I liked how there are breaks where we see a lot of human, personal drama to flesh out the characters (sometimes literally!). The interludes/bonus books really were good as part of the overall story development.

Looking forward to being here for the future!

I had a thought tonight – – from pages 17 to 39, Spooky and Anaado walked through a barren landscape with only a few giant worms, some hellish turtles and evil birds nearby. now suddenly, Ikaroth an ice demoness, appears – – did Ikaroth find them by chance? By design? Is someone else coming to the party? Or is this a case of “Two’s company, Three’s a crowd, Four is a nightmare?”

It may be as simple as Ikaroth not realising until moments ago that the two of them were present, then somehow detecting an anomaly/a human/an abomination and turning up to investigate.

However, if we go with the conspiracy theory that Anaado is being coerced to retrieve/betray/pull faces at Spooky, then Ikaroth has been watching all along. And now that Spooky has started poking holes in Anaado’s cover story, Ikaroth sees no further need for pretence and has made her presence known. Which means we’ll get plot exposition as to what the overarching evil scheme is.

I still wonder it another demon has sensed the intrusion of a human?
