Dude, you’re in a building without electricity—what’s with the shades?

Please note: These are work-in-progress colors. Vero should get me the final colors soon.

Stay Safe and Thank You

Wow, crazy times, huh? Things have moved so fast with the coronavirus pandemic.

Please let me pause for a brief moment of reality in the midst of fun Spooky/Flyboy adventures to just check in with you.

I’ve just been thinking about y’all a lot. We have an international readership, and many folks in China and Europe have suffered greatly. And are still having a difficult time. Here in the U.S., we’re just now starting to run into trouble with the healthcare systems in New York reporting becoming overwhelmed. On a personal note, as many of you know, my fiancé Fernando and I have plans to get married this June—we’ve been planning this wedding for 3 years—and now that’s completely up in the air. And that will likely seem to a very small problem in the weeks to come. On government orders, my fiancé’s office has closed down and I haven’t left my apartment for almost a week.

Like I said, crazy times.

But one of the things that is getting me through this, as I shelter-in-place here in California, is knowing you’re all out there. In the last few days, some old faces have resumed their pledges on Patreon or increased them. There are new folks joining too. That support makes a huge difference in these uncertain times for me being able to continue this comic. And I am very grateful to you all for doing that.

And I am also grateful to those of you who have just let me know that these comics matter to you. Knowing that we’re creating something that makes a difference in other people’s lives, even if it just gives them a smile, keeps me sane and hopeful for the future. I’m hard at work putting the last touches on the script for Chapter 3, and picturing your reactions to every joke, every action beat, and the special surprises I have in store, is a big source of joy for me. Especially now.

Please stay safe, all of you. You’re very important to me. Be even more cautious with washing your hands and creating physical distance than you think you need to be. (The infections that are being reported now really just show where we were 14 days ago.) And be more kind to others, especially those who are different, than you have been before.

There will absolutely, 100% be happier days ahead. And we will get through this. Together. We have the most awesome community in comics here. So just keep being awesome. 🙂

And if you get a chance, please reach out in the comments below and let me know how you are doing. Because I’m thinking about y’all. A lot.

Big hugs.

NEW PATRON THANK YOUS

So!

So! Spooky was able to handle five evil, robed magic users easily enough, one more won’t matter, right? He seems a pleasant sort of chap, anyway—maybe they can hug it out? And why does that thing next to him look so familiar?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

Comments From The Young Protectors Community

  1. What is that glowing artifact on the altar?
Isn’t it familiar? Haven’t we seen it before.

  2. Avatar for Klaus Klaus says:

The priest in his church. The Polonium Priest? The Vanadium Vicar? Or maybe the Carbon Canon?

  3. Avatar for Nate Nate says:

New guy looks a bit like Mister E, from DC Comics:

And is that ribcage-looking thing the Sphere Celestiale?

  4. I was about to say sth about the glowing bone thing but I guess everyone else was simply faster but I’m a day late anyway x’D
Those shades indeed make him look funny though… I dunno… right now I can’t really take him seriously because of them :joy:
I already bet I’ll regret it soon :sob:

  5. Maybe…

Which name would be your favorite?

Ah, I’d forgotten about him. Books of Magic is a personal favorite, though.

Well, Spooky didn’t have any trouble with a whole lot of other magic users, no? How tough could this turkey really be?

  6. Avatar for Klaus Klaus says:

Platinum Priestess is hard to match. The word platinum immediately brings these qualities to mind:

    • A hair color
    • Precious
    • Beautiful
    • Extremely resitant to corrosion

While carbon has many amazing qualities, the word does not bring them to mind like platinum does.
    How about the Diamond Dean?

    • Preciuos
    • Beautiful
    • White (robe, not hair in this case)
    • The hardest of all

Or if we need to refer to hair color, the Priest of the White Temples

  7. Avatar for Nate Nate says:

    The Silver Templar?

  8. Wait who’s the redhead-- OMG the Sphere by Sunglasses!!!
ok Sunglasses has a white robe… so he’s a higher level than the others, and/or their boss, or just has a big enough ego (coughs those shades) to think he is.

  9. I like your reasoning behind this. And I like what you came up with. I might go with the Diamond Deacon for its connections with the Church. Not quite a Priestess but still some authority there.

    Ha!

    Well reasoned.

  10. Avatar for Klaus Klaus says:

So when you see “dean”, you do not think church. Is that an American thing? Don’t you have deans in the US? A priest administering a deanery, a subsection of a diocese. Or do you call them something else?

  11. When I hear “dean,” I think of college and university, i.e. “the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.” So yes, it might very well be an American thing.

But I’d be curious what other folks use in their churches here in the U.S.

  12. In my Roman Catholic upbringing in parochial schools, I was an “Altar Boy” which is technically an “Acolyte.” We on had “Deacons” for Solemn Masses on Holidays like Easter or Christmas when three priests said one mass.
I associate “Deacons” with Protestant faiths.
That’s not much help here, I guess.
